With the opening of our new building, the Friedrich-Schiller-Gymnasium (FSG) now has its own school observatory (...). For the observatory, a dedicated ring was poured during the construction of the reinforced concrete shell. On March 3, 2022, the dome was lifted onto this concrete ring using a crane. It was provided by Baader Planetarium, based in Mammendorf near Munich, Bavaria. Baader is a global leader in the construction of observatories, so our model “Classic Dome,” weighing approximately 900 kg and with a diameter of just over three meters, is equipped with the latest technology: for instance, the slit dome is fully computer-controlled.
Baader Planetarium also supplied a steel pier (model BMP) with a height of 1.65 meters. Due to the design of our observatory, this pier requires a special steel substructure so that it is decoupled and stands on a wall. This is necessary to prevent potential vibrations from affecting observations. The pier is filled with quartz sand, giving it a total weight of almost 250 kg. With the help of a crane from GAAC in Mittenwalde, the pier was lifted through the open dome slit into the observatory and secured on February 7, 2023 (...)Read the full (german) report: The School Observatory of the FSG
